Meet Miss Walsh

Miss Walsh

Hello and welcome to my fifth grade class! My name is Miss Chrissy Walsh and I recently graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education. I received endorsements in Spanish, science, and language arts. While I attended Illinois State University, I spent a semester abroad in Granada, Spain, where I completed my Spanish minor and attempted to master the language! The past two summers I worked as a teaching assistant for Naperville district 204's special education summer school program. I have worked with children through my clinicals at Illinois State University, and tutor kids on the side. This will be my first year teaching and I can not explain how excited I am to meet you and your children! I am ready and eager to begin. I hope through out this year your students will learn a great amount from me and I am certain I will be learning quite a bit from them too!

I currently reside in Naperville, IL with my two wonderful parents and three sisters whom I am very close to. Something my closest friends would know about me is that I love to dance and listen to music. If I ever have spare time, you can most likely catch me watching an award-winning movie or spending time with my friends and family. Most importantly, I have a passion for children and I strongly hope I will be able to make a difference in each of my future students' lives. If there is anything else you would like to know about me, or if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, do not hesitate to contact me by phone or via email. My phone number is 630-342-3563, and my email address is cewalsh@ilstu.edu.

My Educational Philosophy

Every human being has a right to be educated regardless of their ethnicity, gender, age, and beliefs. These moral and intellectual virtues are a very good way to keep this up to power and help educators be as effective as they can possibly be. It is extremely essential to keep in mind as one teaches these 9 virtues and to stay true to them as long as they’re still an educator. Applying these virtues to one’s everyday lessons and incorporating them into the classroom should strongly help one become a professional and successful teacher.

One of the virtues that stood out the most was the moral virtue stating that there should be “sensitivity toward the varieties of individual and cultural diversity”. I find this one extremely important because I have seen a lot of students struggle with peers, school work and even teachers and administrators because of their race or beliefs. When I was in high school, we had a club called the gay-straight alliance. Students who were gay and straight would come and talk about their rights and concerns and some students would just go to give support. When a group of rebels tore down signs or anything to do with that club, I felt disgusted. But when I heard about them beating up some of the students in the club I was enraged. It was at that point I knew I wanted to be a teacher so I could help prevent incidents such as this. In my classroom, I would plan lessons around different groups and cultures to promote cultural awareness and stress upon the uniqueness of every individual. I believe stressing this in one’s classroom will widen student’s responsiveness about others.

Another moral virtue I found to be very important was the one that states that one should demonstrate “disposition and ability to collaborate ethically and effectively with others”. From everything I have been taught and learned throughout life, I have found that in order to be an efficient teacher, one need’s to be able to work with others. This is critical to have with not only your student’s but your employees, and bosses as well. When I was in high school, I had a teacher who spent more time complaining about her boss then actually teaching my class. Not only did her poor relationship with her colleague affect her teaching, but it also affected her mood toward her students and their ability to learn. Teachers should be able to work together and off of each other to improve and get new ideas. As a beginning teacher, it’s important to collaborate with other teachers so they can help you out if you need advice. I plan on having a good relationship with my colleagues and students by respecting them and always being there to help if they need me. In return I would expect the same from them and this can be done by treating them the way you want to be treated.

The last virtue I chose that stuck out at me was the intellectual virtue that states that there should be “contagious intellectual enthusiasm and courage enough to be creative”. Through out my entire years of school, I found the teachers I liked the most and learned the most from were enthusiastic about the content and life in general. It’s easier to want to learn when your teacher is creative, fun and passionate. As I grow and become a teacher, I hope I can use these qualities in my everyday lessons. As part of accomplishing this, I will make sure I’m excited about being there and praise the students for the good jobs they’ve done. I would also try and incorporate fun activities and try to be creative to help make the students want to be there.

In conclusion as part of being a phenomenal teacher it’s necessary to keep in mind all of the nine virtues. They are all very important and the three that I chose just stuck out to me as being above the rest. I believe that if I use all of these virtues in my everyday life, I will accomplish what I set out to!
